A detached guest house, with internet, bathroom, laundry and some cooking facilities, provides a degree of independence for visiting artists working at the Fe29 Art Lab facility in Wimberley, TX. Additional accommodation is available in the main house where BBQ facilities and a deck provide opportunities for social gatherings, after the work has stopped for the day.
For projects involving a large number of out of town artists, Fe29 has established relationships with local artists and others who can provide no, or low cost accommodation for those working on Fe29 projects.
The 5 acres of grounds include flower and vegetable gardens, and a series of tracks through the woods leading to various areas where artists can relax in private. These tracks form the beginning of what will become a sculpture walk. Artist involvement in development and maintenance of the property is welcomed but not expected.
While artists come to work, there are many opportunities for those needing a break from art. The quaint town of Wimberley is located only a few miles away, and has a range of amenities to offer.
Within the hill country community of Wimberley, artists can find many forms of relaxation including shopping, swimming at Jacob’s Well or Blue Hole, outdoor cinema and theater, and a variety of good restaurants. Fe29 is also in close proximity to a wealth of talented individuals, many of whom welcome visits from fellow artists.
A very popular destination for our artists is the 25 acre property of neighbor Terry Raines. Terry is a charming and very interesting 70+ year old. In addition to his sawmill, rock quarry (with railroad), scrap metal yard, large vegetable gardens, pigs and chickens, print shop, and swimming hole, Terry has blasted out of solid rock, a decent sized underground swimming pool.
With long term projects, Fe29 organizes group activities aimed at providing a break from the work and building team spirits. This includes trips to the nearby San Marcos, Blanco, Pedernales and Guadalupe rivers for swimming, tubing or kayaking, or to the highly rated Wimberley Zip Line Adventure. Canyon Lake, less than an hour away, is the perfect place to try out the small sailboat Fe29 recently acquired for use by its artists.
For long term resident artists in need of a ‘city fix’, Wimberley is just 45 minutes from Austin and just over an hour from San Antonio.
