Fe29 Gallery in Saint Clair, Dunedin is a dealer gallery that offers works by renowned New Zealand and overseas artists, many of whom are not represented in other New Zealand galleries.
The gallery is located 3 blocks down Beach Street and within sight of the St Clair esplanade. It is housed in the 1920’s bungalow and grounds of owners Cecilia and Megan Mickelsen. The front three rooms of the home are normally reserved for solo or group exhibitions, typically changed every 4-6 weeks. Various works by other Fe29 artists are displayed throughout the remainder of the home.
Sculptors are well represented at Fe29, with larger works on display in the front courtyard and private rear garden. There are always small to medium sculptures on display in the various gallery spaces, with small works and medals in easily accessible cupboards and drawers throughout the gallery. Sculptors include Frances Hodgkins Fellows Tanya Ashken (1967) and Marté Szirmay (1971/72), US-born sculptors, Jim Wheeler and Bill Hayes, NZ born, now French resident Marian Fountain and stone carver Hamish Horsley, to name just a few.
For those who are interested, Cecilia and Megan provide interesting tours through the gallery, where they are happy to discuss the works and tell stories about the artists.
Viewing works in a home environment is not only relaxing but helps visitors to imagine how chosen pieces might look in their own homes and gardens.
