LOST WORLD - AMY MELCHIOR - 22 FEB - 17 MAR 2020
Born in Wellington in 1974, Amy grew up in Hawke’s Bay before moving to Auckland, where she now lives with her partner and two sons.
A self-taught, award-winning artist, Melchior is an accomplished painter, photographer and printmaker. Combining two of these mediums, Melchior has developed a technique where she builds up painted encaustic layers (beeswax and resin), which she then engraves to create sculptured surfaces.
In Lost World, Melchior creates intricately detailed encaustic works inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs. Many-layered explorations of microcosmic natural forces, the works are full of schools of shooting spores and sprats, shoots unravelling and new cells bubbling up from the deep. With a nod to the honey bee and robust to the touch, the works speak of both the sensual fluidity and structural strength of nature. – Mark Amery
“I love the ocean – I am a mermaid – rock pools are my gardens and the sea my solace. The exploration of the underwater world has awoken intense emotions in me since early childhood. Swimming amongst these strange and exotic underwater gardens is one of my greatest pleasures. Sadly, the rock pools and coral reefs are so threatened by pollution and climate change that scientists agree they may cease to function by the end of this century.”
Complimenting Melchior’s encaustic paintings are selected works created by local ceramicist Liz Fea.
Please note that further images will be added to the website when we receive the final shipment of works.
